NOTICE REGARDING COUNTY NAME CHANGE:

ATTENTION:
On November 4, 2014, two-thirds of Shannon County voted to change the name of the county to Oglala Lakota County. Governor Dennis Daugaard notified Legislature of the results of the election pursuant to SDCL 7-1-71. The Legislature designated the new name of Shannon County as Oglala Lakota County by its passage of House Joint Resolution 1005 in the 2015 Legislative Session. Governor Daugaard publicly proclaimed the results of the election and the new name shall be in full force and effective on the first day of the month following the Governor’s proclamation. (SDCL 7-1-72) The Governor’s proclamation was signed on April 1, 2015. It is hereby proclaimed that as of May 1, 2015 pursuant to the election by people of the county, Shannon County shall be officially renamed Oglala Lakota County.
Any documents that our office receives for recording that are signed and dated before May 1, 2015 will be accepted for recording in our office with Shannon County as the county of record. Any documentation with an instrument date on or after May 1, 2015, will be required to have Oglala Lakota County as the county of record or the document will be rejected.
We have received a certified copy from the Fall River County Auditor’s Office of the vote and proclamation signed by the governor. It will be recorded in our office as a miscellaneous record for your viewing. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office.
