Personalized License Plates
The following questions and answers will tell you what you need to know about South Dakota’s personalized license plates.
Q. How can I get personalized license plates?
A. Complete the application and submit the appropriate fee to the County Treasurers Office @ 906 North River Street, Hot Springs, SD 57747. Up to seven characters are allowed on your license plates (only 6 characters on motorcycle’s). Remember to take your current plate off the vehicle and turn it in to the Treasurer’s office. A permit will be issued to you in the meantime.
Q. How much do personalized plates cost?
A. The fee for personalized plates is added to the fee for the standard plates issued by the county you live in. The annual fee for personalized plates for autos, trucks and motor homes is $25.00 plus a first time postage fee of $5.00.
Q. What happens if I lose my personalized plate?
A. If you lose your plates, or if they are destroyed or stolen, you can obtain duplicate plates by filling out an affidavit at your local Treasurers Office. There is an additional $10.00 for duplicate plates and a $5.00 postage fee.
Q. How long will it take to receive my personalized plates?
A. After filling out the appropriate paperwork with your County Treasurer, a temporary permit will be issued to you for 45 days. You will be required to return the plates that are currently on your vehicle at that time. The application will be mailed to the state to be processed. This may take 4 to 6 weeks. Your plates will be mailed to you separately from the registration. If you have any problems during this process, please feel free to contact the Treasurer’s Office @ 605-745-5145.
